Stereo Minus One a.k.a. label founder Dan Haines Cohen returns in June with 'Bad Karma', the first single from a forthcoming new album.
Following-on from last year's 'Lodestone', Dan is currently putting the finishing touches to 'Everything Is So Beautiful, I Need To Lie Down', his ninth album since 2001. "On this track, which comes from early on the album," Dan explains, "I fuse an ever-changing bank of delayed, distorted tones with a hypnotic locked groove. It's probably the steadiest beat I've ever committed to a track since I started breaking loops in 1998."
In a shift from the near-ambient 'Lodestone', beats make a few appearances on 'Everything Is So Beautiful, I Need To Lie Down', although "much of the album is working in a dream-like void. The album journeys through different electronic sounds, styles, and inner states of consciousness, having wandered off the dancefloor in search of a quiet moment.
"I'm nearly always making music for a freaky sort of chill-out room, off to the side of a rave somewhere," Dan says. "But it's that time of the night when all your senses have been overloaded. You find yourself in a quieter space but, rather than relaxing you, the relative quiet confronts you with the sound of your own heart-beat, the racing of your pulse, the feeling of sweat on your skin. Being alive is endlessly intense in the rare moments when we actually grasp it. Sound, noise, and music don't recede at those times, it turns out the universe is really noisy even in the deepest mental depths."
"'Bad Karma', and the whole album, are made for those ecstatic moments. Those moments when you become aware of the millions little things and sounds that normally don't enter your awareness at all. By the time you see your mates again, you might not be too sure what tunes were being played or what just happened. Blinding night though!"
UK producer Sunbane's latest LP, moody electronic music with an experimental pop heart, was made from a place of intense personal struggle. Bandcamp New & Notable Oct 6, 2020
For this LP, Formen modified old 16bit effects units which were then cascaded via internal patch points to develop a glitchy sound. Bandcamp New & Notable Dec 18, 2021
